Before You Apply
Minimum Requirements
Set by California licensing requirements and the demands of the work.
- At least 18 years old (21 for armed positions)
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Eligible to hold a California BSIS security guard registration
- For armed positions: eligible to hold a BSIS exposed firearms permit
- Reliable transportation to assigned posts
- For roles that involve driving a patrol vehicle: a valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug screening
- Professional in appearance and conduct
- Able to write a clear, accurate report
Registration with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services requires fingerprint background checks through the California Department of Justice and the FBI. A criminal record does not automatically disqualify you — convictions are assessed individually, as California’s Fair Chance Act requires, and only after a conditional offer.

Any training you still need, then field training with an FTO before you stand a post alone.
